Somebody in Tauranga got quoted $12,000 last month for a five page website. Someone else paid $400 to a bloke on Facebook and got a site that Google has never once shown to a customer. Both of them asked us the same question afterwards: what is this actually supposed to cost?
Fair question. We have built over 70 websites for New Zealand small businesses since 2018, most of them right here in the Bay of Plenty, and we see the quotes locals get from every direction. So here is the straight answer on website cost in NZ for 2026: the real market ranges, the ongoing costs nobody mentions in the sales call, what Bay of Plenty businesses actually end up paying, and our own price list in plain sight. We have also just reset our own prices downward, and we will explain exactly why.
The short answer: website cost in NZ at a glance
| Option | Typical NZ cost 2026 | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) | $20 to $60+ per month, plus your weekends | Hobby projects, testing an idea |
| Freelancer | $800 to $2,500 | Simple sites, if you find a good one |
| Agency, small business site | $1,500 to $8,000 | Most trading businesses |
| Agency, larger custom or ecommerce | $3,000 to $30,000+ | Online stores, complex builds |
| Big city agency, same site | $5,000 to $15,000+ | Businesses that enjoy paying Auckland rent |
Those ranges line up with what other NZ pricing guides publish, and they are honest as far as they go. The problem is the spread. A range like “$1,500 to $8,000” tells you almost nothing about what YOUR site should cost, so let us break down where the money actually goes.
Why website quotes vary so wildly
Two quotes for the same brief can be $2,000 apart and both be legitimate. The price moves on a handful of things: how many pages need real design work, whether the content is written for you or by you, whether the build is a template with your logo dropped on top or a custom job, whether SEO structure is built in from day one or bolted on later, and how much of the agency’s office lease you are funding.
That last one is not a joke. A big chunk of the difference between a $3,500 site and a $9,000 site is overhead, not output. It is also why quotes from outside the region often bear no relationship to what the same work costs from a Tauranga web designer working without a floor of account managers.
The DIY builder: what “free” actually costs
Wix, Squarespace and friends advertise from around $20 to $60 a month. Over three years that is $700 to $2,200, which is real money, and it buys you a site you built yourself in the evenings, on a platform you do not control, that tends to load slowly and rank poorly against purpose built competition.
We are not sneering at DIY. If you are testing a business idea, a builder site is a perfectly sensible $30 a month experiment. But if the business is real and you need Google to send you customers, the maths changes fast. One extra job a month pays for a professional site several times over, and the DIY platforms make that first ranking job much harder to win.
Freelancer or agency in the Bay?
A good freelancer at $800 to $2,500 can be genuine value. The catch is variance. The good ones are booked out, the cheap ones disappear when the site breaks, and you will not know which you hired until something goes wrong at 9pm before a product launch.
An agency costs more because you are buying the boring things that keep a site alive: process, testing, security updates, hosting that gets monitored, and someone who still answers the phone in two years. Around the Bay, a fair agency price for a proper small business website in 2026 sits between $1,500 and $4,000. Beyond that you should be getting something specific for the extra money: more pages, ecommerce, custom features, serious content work. If a quote is well past $5,000 for a standard brochure site, ask exactly what the extra is buying.
What Bay of Plenty businesses actually pay: our numbers
National guides quote national ranges. Here is what we see locally, from 70+ builds and the quotes clients show us:
- Typical BoP tradie or service business site, done properly: $1,500 to $3,000
- Multi page business site with dedicated service and location pages: $2,500 to $5,000
- Local ecommerce: $3,000 to $10,000 depending on catalogue size
- Quotes our clients received from out of town agencies for the same work: routinely $6,000 to $12,000
The pattern is consistent: Bay businesses are regularly quoted big city prices for small business work. The work itself does not cost that here.
The ongoing costs nobody mentions in the sales call
The build price is not the whole bill. Every website carries running costs, and this is where cheap builds quietly get expensive:
- Domain name: $20 to $60 a year for a .nz or .co.nz
- Hosting: $15 to $120+ a month. Cheap offshore shared hosting is where fast sites go to die
- Maintenance and updates: $50 to $300 a month if paid for, or your own time if not. Unmaintained WordPress sites get hacked, it is a matter of when
- SSL certificate: should be free in 2026. If someone is charging you $200 a year for SSL, that tells you something about the rest of their pricing
Our Hosting & Care plans start at $49 + GST a month and cover NZ hosting, updates, security and support in one line item, which is the honest way to price it. Whatever provider you choose, get the ongoing costs in writing before you sign the build quote.
Why we just dropped our prices
Here is the part other agencies will not enjoy us publishing. Over the past year we have rebuilt how we work around AI assisted tooling: research, project organisation, code scaffolding, QA checks, the mechanical parts of a build that used to eat days. It has roughly halved the production time on a standard site. The design thinking, the strategy and the local knowledge are still human, and still us, but the grunt work is dramatically faster.
When your build time halves, you have two options: pocket the difference, or reprice. We repriced. Charging 2023 hours at 2026 speed did not sit right with us, so our prices have come down to match what the work now takes. Same custom builds, same standards, fewer hours, smaller invoice. That is the whole story.
AI changed more than how we build, it changed how customers find you. People now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI who to hire, not just the old ten blue links. If you are curious whether AI can actually see your business, run the free AI visibility check on List-It, the NZ directory we built for exactly this. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.
Our prices, in plain sight
Most agencies make you book a discovery call to hear a number. Ours are public:
| Package | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Starter website | $1,499 + GST | A one page site designed to sell your business. Mobile first, fast, SEO foundations built in |
| Business website | From $2,499 + GST | Multi page build with dedicated service and location pages, internal linking architecture, enhanced on page SEO |
| Authority website | Custom quote | Multi location or multi service architecture, custom integrations, ecommerce, long term lead generation builds |
Terms are simple: 50% before the build starts, 50% on completion, typical delivery in 4 to 6 weeks. Full detail on the pricing page, including SEO from $650 + GST a month and hosting from $49 + GST a month.
How to avoid getting stung
Whoever you hire, in whatever town, run these checks before money moves:
- Ask for the all up figure: build plus hosting plus maintenance for year one. Compare that number, not the sticker price
- Ask who owns the site and the domain. The answer must be you. Walk away from anyone who keeps the domain in their name
- Ask to see three live sites they built and check them on your phone. Slow on mobile means slow everywhere it matters
- Ask what happens after launch. A site with no support plan is a countdown timer
- Be suspicious of both ends of the range. $400 sites cost you customers, and five figure quotes for five page sites are funding somebody’s overhead
Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a website in NZ?
For a genuine small business site built by professionals, expect $1,500 to $4,000 in 2026. Under $800 usually means a template job with no SEO substance. Well over $5,000 should come with a specific, itemised reason.
How much does a website cost per month in NZ?
After the build: domain around $2 to $5 a month averaged out, hosting $15 to $120, and maintenance $50 to $300 if you pay for it. A bundled hosting and care plan around $49 to $99 a month is the typical honest all in figure for a small business site.
How much does a small business website cost in the Bay of Plenty specifically?
From our local build data: $1,500 to $3,000 for a service business site, $2,500 to $5,000 for a larger multi page build. If your quote is far outside that, ask what the difference is paying for.
Is a custom website worth it over a template?
If you rely on Google for customers, yes. Custom builds load faster, structure better for SEO, and are not fighting a bloated theme. That is the difference between page one and page four, and page four does not ring.
Should I use a freelancer or an agency?
A good freelancer is great value if you can verify their track record and accept the support risk. An agency costs more and buys you continuity: process, security, and someone accountable in two years. For a business that depends on its website, continuity usually wins.
How much does an ecommerce website cost in NZ?
Realistically $3,000 to $30,000 depending on catalogue size, integrations and design. Small local stores land at the bottom of that range. Anyone quoting a flat number without seeing your product list is guessing.
The bottom line
A small business website in the Bay of Plenty should cost you somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000 to build properly, plus honest running costs of roughly $50 to $100 a month. Pay much less and you are buying an ornament. Pay much more and you are buying someone’s overhead. And in 2026, with AI cutting production time in half, prices should be coming down, not up. Ours did.
